Okay, so I have decided that in further posts, I will just name my peeps, rather than use initials, mainly because I get confused. Now on to other matters:
I was reading Parade, the magazine that comes in the Sunday paper around here, (I assume everywhere) and what I read interests me. First, you need to know that I don’t really follow politics or alot of hot topics, such as global warming. I know that doesn’t do much for my reputation, but I think I’ve got enough stuff to worry about here in my own little world, without getting all pissed off about the state of the nation and other crap. Now, don’t get me wrong, I stay informed, mainly by my husband (whose political views swing the opposite direction) and from my mother (from whom I inherited my liberal ideas) and my friends, whose opinions I enjoy hearing.
Anyway, according to the Parade:
- Every year since 1997 has been in the Top 10 list of hottest years, and 2005 set a new record.
- A recent Duke study found that increased carbon dioxide has led to out-of-control growth of poison ivy, and increased levels of pollen.
- Within the next 15 years, Mt. Kilimanjaro may be ice-free, after atleast 11,700 years of being covered.
I don’t know how much this will affect my family in our lifetime, but I know that it doesn’t seem like that many years ago we first started hearing about global warming, and now the warnings are becoming harsher. Maybe I’ll step up my recycling efforts another notch. This is as good a time as any, I reckon.

Like yourself I have enough going on in my corner of the world to ‘miss’ much of what happens in the day to day BS that people call ‘news’. I’ve heard carbon dioxide all the way to this is a ‘normal’ warming cycle. We recycle, I take public transport as much as possible so… If Mt. Kilimanjaro is ice free in 15 years well… damn. What are we going to do?

Glaciers that are hundreds of thousands of years old have melted away in this nation and may soon disappear altogether. Ice sheets from Antartica that are even older and the size of Delaware and New Jersey have broken off and floated out to sea. The northern route around the world stayed open last year all year round. Indeed, there is talk about relocating polar bears if the ice at the north pole should be further compromised and melt away. Heat energy is making hurricane season last longer and increasing the violence of storms. The deforestation by fire of the three quarters of the Rain Forest has flooded the atmosphere with debris and hydrocarbons, and has deprived us of a resource where most modern medicines are derived. Further, the Rain Forest functioned as an air conditioner for the planet…but no more. Men have changed the planet more in the last 10 to 15 years than in the previous 2,000.
There are natural cycles, but people contribute as well to the state of the ecosystem. It is not an either/or situation.
When you look at the effects of human pollution, it seems to me that we have not been the best stewards of God’s creation.
I have not seen former VP Gore’s movie about such matters, but it seems to me that such concerns should be important to both liberals and conservatives.
Peace,
Father Joe
